What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces very small files for a given quality, so websites use it to load pages faster. Downloading an image from such a site can leave you with an .avif file that your photo viewer, editor or upload form does not recognize.

Why JPG is still useful

JPG is the most widely supported image format. Almost every device, app, website and printer accepts it. Converting AVIF to JPG trades some file size for compatibility, and the quality slider under Options controls that trade.

Before you convert

Your browser has to be able to open AVIF to read the file. All current mainstream browsers can. If your browser is too old, you will see an error message for that file. Transparent areas are filled with white by default, and you can change the color under Options.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. Your images are never sent to our server or to anyone else. You can confirm this in your browser's developer tools: the network tab shows no image data leaving the page.

Why will my browser not open my AVIF file?

Older browsers do not support AVIF. Update your browser or try a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.

Is AVIF better than JPG?

AVIF files are usually smaller at the same visual quality. JPG wins on compatibility, which is why conversion is common.

Is the conversion lossless?

No. JPG is a lossy format. A quality setting of 92 percent or higher keeps the result close to the original.
